    DAY OF MEMORY OF THE ROMA VICTIMS IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

    In the Memorial Complex “Stratište” in Jabuka near Pancevo, a central state commemoration was held on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of Roma Victims in the Second World War

    December. 16. 1942. In 2010, the commander of the infamous units, Heinrich Himmler, issued an order for the systematic sending of Roma to concentration camps. That day was later designated as the International Day of Remembrance of Roma Victims in the Second World War. Then 2200 Roma, Serbs and Jews were shot at this place in Jabuca.

    From the 29 January 1943. do 2. August of the following year, 23,000 Roma from European countries that were under Nazi occupation were imprisoned in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in Poland and in the Cigojnerlager sub-camp, of which around 20,000 were killed.

    On behalf of the National Council of the Roma National Minority, wreaths were laid by President Dalibor Nakić, President of the Executive Board Pava Čabrilovski and Secretary General Dejan Vlajković, the Council announced.

    The commemoration was organized by the Government Committee for Nurturing the Traditions of the Liberation Wars of Serbia, and was attended on behalf of the Government of Serbia by the State Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Miodrag Kapor, the President of the Town of Pancevo Tigran Kiš, representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of international organizations.

    At the commemoration, the speakers, including President Nakić, said that we must not forget the time when people were persecuted only because of their nationality and that the fight against discrimination, violence and intolerance is the task of all citizens of Serbia.
